Getting a Team That Actually Owns Finance
Company Overview
Georgia Roof Advisors is a full-service roofing company based in Marietta, Georgia - roof repairs, replacements, and commercial work, including large HOA neighbourhood re-roofs.
James Gasson and his wife bought the business in 2016 (it's been running since 2009), and over the past ten years James has done a bit of everything - run the office, run the crews, all of it.
The Challenge
When James's office manager left last October, he had to absorb the workload himself.
Come spring, things got very busy and he needed support on the finance side. He tried two firms before us - neither worked out.
The first couldn't get accounts receivable running, and the second managed AR fine, but stalled on AP and never picked up the pace James needed. Neither took ownership over the processes in the way James was looking for.
The Solution
Scalability stepped in as Georgia Roof Advisors' finance team - full AR and AP support, cleaning up and streamlining their systems, as well as providing fractional CFO support.
The difference showed up fast:
"I think the second week they were like, give us some accounts payable. We already know how to do accounts receivable."
The Results
1. Full Ownership, Not Just Task Completion
The biggest difference James noticed wasn’t just skill - it was ownership.
"You leaned on the fact that you were going to take full ownership - that's what it was. The other people said, 'we're going to do AR, we're going to do AP,' but they never actually said, 'we're going to take it all off your plate and own it.'"
That shows up in the small stuff too - if an account's gone quiet, the team flags it directly to James instead of letting it sit.
2. Time and Headspace to Be Strategic
With bookkeeping, AR, and AP off his plate, James isn't stuck doing cleanup anymore. He's building the stuff that actually grows the business - training, sales tools, client materials.
"I'm starting to get to the point where I can be a little bit more strategic - I'm working on putting together our training systems a little bit better."
That's also freed him up to do the things only he can do - estimating, running job sites, showing up at networking groups where owners want to deal with the owner, not a sales rep.
3. A Forward-Looking Finance Partner
Beyond the day-to-day, our fractional CFO has become James's sounding board for the bigger calls - like what it actually takes to scale.
"If we double our business, I'm going to need two more trucks, I'm going to need to increase these softwares - it's nice to have someone to talk that over with."
Final Thoughts
For James, this wasn't just about having someone take over finance - it was finally getting a team that treats the work like it's theirs, because it is.
His advice to other owners:
"These people have really owned it. They really owned the task of taking on the operations and admin in the business, and helped us start conversations and given us direction on what we need to do to help us scale."
